AMERICAN LEGION DISTRICT 5 HOLDS POOL TOURNAMENT IN PENACOOK

It was a cool Saturday morning on January 16th but at the American Legion Post 31 in Penacook, things were heating up. The hour was drawing near and in the smoke filled pool room, 22 members of the Legion and Auxiliary were practicing for the tournament that was about to start.

Most of the contestants brought their own personal pool sticks that were carefully transported into the arena. Chalk was aplenty and good natured jousting was evident. These members were very familiar with the tournament having been contestants many times before.

Two person teams were chosen by lottery and then those 11 teams were chosen by lottery as to when they would start and against whom. This was a double elimination eight ball game. The top three teams would move on to the Department (State) tournament to be held at Post 1 in Laconia on Sunday, February 7, 2010.

The skills of the players were evident in their concentration and the spectators were riveted in their chairs watching. Other than the crack of the cue balls against the balls, there was little noise in the room. When the smoke had cleared, the three winning teams were announced along with a alternate team.

The first place team was Dick Wright and Dave Cullen; second place Jim Frost and Jesse Brown; third place Dale and Mike Nudd and the alternate team was Steve Lowell and John Raymond.

Department Commander Bill Roy congratulated all the contestants and commended District 5 Commander Ernie Jones for his organizing a well run tournament.
